Where Community Meets Culture

ABOUT COMMONWEALTH HOUSE

Over 50 years ago, the leader of St Aldate's Church met an international student who had suddenly been made homeless.  This led the church to establish Commonwealth House to provide safe and affordable accommodation, mainly for overseas students in Oxford. With help from the British Council, the church purchased seven adjacent  buildings on Pembroke Street where international academics and students could enjoy secure and friendly community.

Since then Commonwealth House has become a place of deep hospitality welcoming people from many nations to this world-class city. Commonwealth House has a Christian foundation seeking to glorify God and demonstrate God’s love in practical ways.  There is no discrimination on racial or religious grounds in the selection or treatment of residents.  We still maintain close links with the vibrant community of St Aldate's Church next door and a variety of social and cultural events are offered to residents to make the most of their time in Oxford.

Commonwealth House is more than just accommodation — it’s a home away from home for international students and academics from around the world.  It’s a place where people of all cultures, languages, and walks of life share a unique chapter of their academic journey.  Since the beginning, our mission has been to create a peaceful, welcoming space where diversity is not only respected but celebrated. Here, residents form lasting friendships, support one another, and contribute to a truly global community.

We believe that shared living fosters understanding and connection. Whether it’s through everyday conversations, cultural celebrations, or house events, Commonwealth House offers a space where residents can learn from one another and feel a true sense of belonging.
